Prior to court reorganization, there were two levels of trial courts in Wisconsin: the county courts and the circuit courts. Although the workload split varied from county to county, in general the judges in the county courts handled probate, juvenile, and traffic matters, and the judges in the circuit courts handled civil and criminal jury trials.

Wisconsin State Courts. The judicial system for Wisconsin features two separate federal district courts which is linked to the 7th Circuit. There are multiple trials courts, some of which deal with specific subject-matter cases, and these feed into the court of appeals and the supreme courts for the state of Wisconsin, which is the court of last resort and wields the most power within the state.

The Supreme Court consists of 7 justices, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals has 16 judges, and the Wisconsin Circuit Court has 253 judges in 72 counties. All the judges and justices are elected in nonpartisan elections. The Wisconsin Supreme Court justices serve for a term of 10 years, while judges of other courts serve for a term of 6 years.
